The A. Raymon Thacker Levee is built to extend three feet above the highest recorded elevation of flood waters of the James River. In addition to the levee, the flood protection system includes a pumping station and provides for gates on Ferry Street and Main Street which seal off the town from encroaching waters. When the James River rises to flood levels, the Levee Superintendent, assisted by members of the Scottsville Volunteer Fire Department, activates the pumps in the pumping station and closes the flood gates.
